Tuesday marks three full weeks without a House speaker and 24 days until the government runs out of money, to say nothing of aid packages many lawmakers want for Israel and Ukraine. Most Republicans voted for all three men as speaker, but the outside edges of the party were too big to get a majority. Only two of the current speaker candidates supported the 2020 election results: Emmer and Scott. Four of the current speaker candidates voted no, including Sessions. But Trump’s power within the House GOP is limited.

House Republicans entered the weekend without their leading speaker candidate, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who dropped out of the race on Friday. "This is embarrassing for the Republican Party, embarrassing for the nation," former speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Ca., said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press." Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney did not voice support for any specific candidate, saying on CNN's "State of the Union" that the current state of House Republican dysfunction is not surprising. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who served from 1995 to 1999, said the House Republicans are dragging their feet. Of the nine candidates in the speaker race so far, none are women.

Jim Jordan was set to fall short in a third round of voting to secure the gavel Friday morning, after struggling to win support from colleagues who have opposed his candidacy, likely leaving Republicans at a fresh impasse. While the Ohio conservative has campaigned as a speaker who can unite the party, he continues to face long odds, a full week after securing the GOP nomination and more than two weeks after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) was ousted. Republicans have no current fallback plan after rejecting a proposal to vote on giving more powers to Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R., N.C.).

Jordan, who has lost two votes for speaker this week, emerged from an hours-long closed-door meeting with fellow Republicans to say he would press ahead with a third vote. It was not clear when the House would vote again on a speaker. House Democrats and the White House have said they are open to that idea, but many Republicans rejected it. He told fellow Republicans on Thursday that he would drop out of the speaker's race if his opponents were unmoved after talking with him, two lawmakers said. One of those, Representative Drew Ferguson, said in a statement on Thursday: "The House Republican Conference does not need a bully as the speaker."
